Develop the strength, awareness and mobility you need to safely develop your backbend practice.

During these workshops you’ll be given a toolkit of drills to incorporate, and explore assists and transitions inspired by contortion, dance and mobility training for further support and strength.

FRIDAY 19:30 - 21:30 Master class

Creative Vinyasa - Backbend Focus

Inspired by vinyasa yoga and dance this class links breath to movement helping you to find your flow state and switch off from the chaos and stresses of modern day life.

In this class we will focus on the technique of spinal waves and spirals. We will explore how the spine is built to not only flex, extend, laterally flex and rotate: but also to undulate like a wave.

We will then look at how to apply this spinal action and its benefits to asanas such as cobra (Bhujangasana), camel (Ustrasana) and wheel (Urdhva-Dhanurasana) creating a longer spine, stronger core and more detoxifying backbend.

SATURDAY 14:00 - 16:30 Upper back and shoulders

This workshop will use dance-inspired spinal waves, circles and twists to explore how to create length and strength in the spine - as well as how to perform fluid and graceful transitions.

This workshop will explore:

  • Mobility drills for the upper back and shoulders.

  • Alignment, modifications, prop and partner work for cobra, bow, kapotasana, camel and wheel.

  • Fun transitions, creative sequencing and variations including camel to wheel, forearm wheel plus dropbacks!

SUNDAY 12:00 - 14:30 Hip flexors, glutes and hamstrings

In this workshop you'll dive into the vital role the hamstrings and hips play in developing stronger, safer backbends. We'll extend that out to include the glutes, quadriceps and inner thighs.

In this workshop we will explore:

  • Backbends and splits including lunge, splits, standing splits and dancers pose.

  • The differences between passive, active, dynamic and isometric stretching and how you can apply them to backbends.* Correct glute engagement and deep hip flexor stretching via targeted exercises.

  • Modifications, variations and interesting transitions in and out of these poses.

All levels welcome
